How We Operate

The GPs' Own Charity can Support you in Times of Need.

We receive enquiries for many different reasons; from young doctors starting out in the profession who may have large debts, which working as a locum has made unmanageable, from doctors who may be GP partners, facing difficulties in the middle of their careers – perhaps through GMC restrictions or issues with their local PCT and from the elderly in retirement homes. Potential beneficiaries are often referred by a Local Medical Committee or support organisations.

Everyone seeking assistance is asked to complete an application form, from which a detailed report is prepared. Requests for assistance are reviewed by trustees at regular meetings and a trustee, or a member of staff, will visit the applicant to ensure their circumstances are fully understood. If a situation is urgent, we can provide help quickly.

We strive to provide the most appropriate support: a grant paid in instalments, direct payments to third parties, a guaranteed loan towards expenses while re-training or maybe a secured loan for essential property repairs.

We understand that in many instances, a GP may be in a fast-changing situation. We are able to review and change the assistance we provide at short notice.
